“Going through hard times also causes you to learn hard things.”
In the world of children’s literature, many stories captivate young minds with vibrant illustrations and engaging tales. But every so often, you come across a story that holds a deeper meaning—one that stems from the author's personal experiences. For Steph Marquardt, her debut children’s book, Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place, is much more than a delightful adventure. It is a testimony of resilience, faith, and healing.
Steph's journey to becoming an author began years ago, long before the book's characters came to life on the page. At the core of her children’s book is the story of her family's struggle with infertility. Though she and her previous husband are now the proud parents of two beautiful children, their path to parenthood was filled with heartbreak, loss, and many unanswered questions. Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place is a tribute to their journey. For Steph, the book became an integral part of her healing process and a testament that “You are never too late, never too old to start doing what you want,” Steph explains.
The decision to write Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place didn’t come easily, and the journey from conception to final printed copies was long. It took Stephanie three years to bring her vision to life, but the process was therapeutic. She poured her heart into each word, drawing from the deep well of emotions that came with her experiences. “This book is dedicated to all my children, those born in heaven, as well as all the other mamas who are struggling through their own infertility journeys,” she shared. For Steph, writing this story was a way to honor the memory of her lost children and to bring hope and comfort to other families facing similar challenges.
Bringing the Story to Life: The Magic of Giraffes and Majestic Illustrations
The creation of Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place wouldn’t have been complete without the stunning illustrations by local artist Jessica Brophy, whose artwork beautifully captures the essence of the story. Steph and Jessica formed an incredible partnership, working closely to bring the characters and scenes to life. Steph’s favorite animal, giraffes, inspired the main characters. “I’ve always related to giraffes,” Steph explained. “They’re tall and a little clumsy—like me!” She describes how they make her smile and laugh, especially how they run. But at the same time, they have stately and incredible creatures.
The giraffes Lofty and Sky serve as metaphors for Steph’s own journey. Their long necks and tall stature remind readers to stand tall and reach for the sky, no matter their challenges. Through Jessica’s artistry, the giraffes come alive on the page, capturing the wonder and beauty of the story’s message. Each illustration is meaningful and curated, drawing children into the characters' world while conveying a deeper sense of hope, perseverance, and faith.
Faith, Family, and the Power of Stories
At its core, Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place is a story of dreams, faith, and the importance of family. For Steph and her previous husband, becoming parents was a journey that required perseverance and deep trust in God’s timing. Their faith played a significant role in helping them navigate the ups and downs of infertility. “God's timing is better, God’s plan is better, and I get to trust you more, God,” Steph said. This message of faith is woven throughout the pages of Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place, offering young and old readers a reminder to trust in something greater during difficult times.
The book’s publisher, Covenant Books, is a Christian-based company that shared Steph’s vision for the story. With their support, Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place was brought to the public and is now available for purchase on Amazon and soon Barnes and Noble. Steph hopes that her book will bring joy to children and comfort families who have experienced the heartbreak of infertility. Steph wants “Readers and their children to have a special moment and meaningful conversation.” She wants her book to help kids understand that they are really loved and for them to think, “My mom and dad really wanted to have me.”
A Story for Every Family
Lofty and Sky’s Happy Space and Place is more than just a children's book; it’s a heartfelt message for families navigating the joys and sorrows of life. Steph’s personal story of loss and hope is interwoven with the charming tale of two giraffes, creating a unique blend of lighthearted fun and emotional depth. Through this book, Steph has given readers a gift, a story that teaches children the importance of faith, resilience, and the beauty of family while also offering comfort to parents who may have experienced their own struggles.
