Beyond Capacity
Yellowstone County has tried to keep people out of jail. The jail keeps getting fuller. With YCDF regularly housing more than 600 people in a facility rated for 434, voters will soon face a significant decision about what comes next. But this conversation is about much more than adding beds. It’s about who is in the jail and why, what the County has already tried, the role of treatment and alternatives to incarceration, what overcrowding means for safety and rehabilitation, and what additional space can, and cannot, solve. This is a heavier topic than we typically cover at Simply Local, but caring about our community means being willing to understand the difficult issues we face together. Our goal isn’t to tell you how to vote. It’s to help you look beyond the assumptions, ask good questions, and make an informed decision.
