Lights, Camera, Roar: A Memorable Movie Night at ZooMontana

As summer nights stretch into the warm, starry evenings, many communities look for unique ways to make the season last just a little bit longer. Not quite ready to submit to the rigid schedule and deadlines of school starting, fall sports kicking into high gear, and strict 9:00 pm bedtimes, families yearn for a bit more summer. One of the most enchanting ways to experience this is Billings Kiwanis “Movies Under the Stars,” a special event at ZooMontana. Combining the magic of cinema with the wonder of wildlife, this end-of-summer hit has gained popularity for its blend of entertainment, concessions, and community spirit.

The idea is simple: set up a large outdoor screen and projector in a designated area of the Zoo and invite families, couples, and friends to enjoy a movie night under the open sky. The rolling stretches of soft green grass almost beg for a blanket to be spread out, inviting families to relax and wind down their evening together. Unlike traditional movie theaters, this event offers the chance to connect with nature and enjoy the ambiance of an outdoor setting. The sounds of the Zoo—whether it’s the distant call of a bird or the rustling of leaves—add a natural soundtrack to the movie experience.

Guests typically arrive late afternoon or early evening, giving them time to explore the Zoo’s exhibits. ZooMontana boasts the state’s only Zoo and botanical park and is home to nearly 100 animals. With a dedication to the conservation of wildlife, the Zoo offers visitors a chance to learn about animals in their natural habitats, from tigers and bears to river otters and the Canadian Lynx. Most of their animals are rescues, and the Zoo proudly lives out its motto of “quality over quantity” as they care for the animals that live there. Moviegoers enjoy free or discounted admission to the Zoo on movie nights and get to see their favorite four-legged friends up close and personal before the show begins. As dusk approaches, the Zoo transforms into a cozy outdoor cinema. Blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged, creating a relaxed atmosphere where attendees can comfortably enjoy the film.

Movies Under the Stars not only seeks to entertain but to serve. All of the proceeds raised from the four events this fall go back into the community 100%. Recipients include Tumbleweed, Family Tree, and the Special K Ranch. (Most people don’t realize that the “K” stands for Kiwanis)! With help from their sponsors, Valley Credit Union and Par Montana, Billings Kiwanis brings the largest inflatable outdoor screen in Montana to thrill moviegoers of all ages. The choice of movies varies but often includes family-friendly classics, animated features, or nature-themed films that complement the zoo environment. As people gather to watch films surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Zoo, they also support vital conservation efforts and create lasting memories. This unique event is a must-try for those seeking a distinctive and enjoyable summer experience.

If you would like to attend, choose your favorite movie and grab your blanket and lawn chair…or check out all three of the remaining movie nights at the Zoo! The doors open at 5:30, and all movies begin at dusk.
