Dog Sledding in Bi Sky Country

Most New Year’s resolutions focus on improving ourselves physically, mentally, or spiritually. But more often than not, unless those resolutions become a full-on lifestyle change, we rarely, if ever, see them through to the end of the year, which ultimately leads to feelings of failure and disappointment. This new year, why not try something new? Make it a goal to have a “new to you” experience.

SPIRIT OF THE NORTH

As a Montana native, I’ve experienced a lot of what Montana has to offer: skiing, snowboarding, fishing, white-water rafting, hiking, overnight backpacking trips, horseback riding, livestock branding, and more. Born and raised in Big Sky country, I had yet to take a ride in a dog sled until last winter, that is. After talking to many long-time Montana residents, I found that most had never considered it.

Dog sledding is most often associated with places like Alaska, Canada, Norway, or Iceland. However, this magical experience is just hours away for us here in Billings! Spirit of the North Sled Dog Adventures has been operating since 1994. They operate from two different locations. In Big Sky, rides run from December 1st through March 31st, depending on snow and trail conditions.

From West Yellowstone, you can book a tour during the Christmas season, from December 18th through the 31st. Trips are usually around 2 hours long, dependent on weather conditions.

 NEW ADVENTURE

We booked a tour in Big Sky last February. From start to finish, it was a fantastic experience that exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a choir of yelping sled dogs, ready and excited to begin our adventure. We had some time to greet the eager pups before settling into the sleds. The sled was surprisingly comfortable, even with two children on my lap. The launch from the base was exhilarating, as you could feel the energy and excitement of the dogs being set loose. As the different sleds began to drift apart, creating some space, all that could be heard was the panting of the dogs and the pounding of their paws on the snow. It was paired beautifully with the sights that surrounded us: towering trees, fields blanketed in snow, and mountain views around every bend.

At the halfway point, the dogs pulled over for a much-needed break. Getting out of the sled to stretch our legs was also necessary. The guides handed out cookies and hot cocoa. It was fun mingling with fellow sled riders. To our surprise, we were the only Montanans. Everyone on our tour was from out of state, including one couple who came all the way from Alabama for the experience.

The trip ended with a swift dash home. The dogs were exhausted and eager to return to their warm, comfy kennels. Anyone willing helped the guides by untangling the dogs from the sleds and carrying them back to their kennels. It was a true team effort, to say the least.

We made our way into the Big Sky Village center, stopping by Treeline Coffee Roasters to grab something warm as we reminisced about the day. One thing was easily agreed upon - the dog sledding adventure was worth every penny. If there is one Montana experience that you do only once in your life, this is it. Take your loved ones and create a memory that will last a lifetime and beyond.

This year, try something you’ve never done before, make a memory you’ve never created before, and tell a story you’ve never shared before. This is the year to have a “new to you” adventure.
