A DIY Ornament That Captures the Magic of Childhood

There’s something magical about the way the holidays invite us to slow down, gather close, and create meaningful memories together. Whether it’s baking cookies or crafting ornaments, these simple traditions often become the ones our children remember most.

This year, try a family favorite that’s timeless and easy enough for even the littlest helpers: a snowman handprint ornament. Part keepsake, part work of art, it captures your child’s hand in paint, turning each tiny finger into a family of cheerful snowmen. It’s more than a craft; it’s a moment frozen in time.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Plain glass or shatterproof Christmas ornaments (white, clear, or colored)
  • White acrylic or non-toxic craft paint
  • Small paintbrushes or foam brush
  • Permanent markers or acrylic paints (black, orange, red, and other colors)
  • Ribbon or twine for hanging
  • Optional: glitter spray, matte sealer, or clear varnish to protect your design

HOW TO MAKE IT

1) PREPARE THE ORNAMENT

Wipe the ornament clean so the paint adheres well. For clear ornaments, add a bit of glitter or faux snow inside for sparkle.

Tip: Plastic ornaments are great for young kids. Less stress, same charm.

2) PAINT TINY HANDS

Coat your child’s palm and fingers with white paint, then gently have them wrap their hand around the ornament’s base. Lift carefully to reveal a perfect handprint, and let dry completely, about 30 minutes.

3) BRING THE SNOWMEN TO LIFE

Once dry, decorate each fingertip snowman, and allow your child to decide what kind of personality each one has. Use permanent markers or paints to draw little faces, scarves, hats, and buttons on each snowman. Add carrot noses in bright orange and maybe a few earmuffs, mittens, or bow ties for good measure.

TIP: Metallic paint pens or fine-tipped markers add a festive touch and work beautifully over the white paint.

4) FINISHING & HANG

Seal with a light mist of glitter spray or varnish, then tie on a ribbon for hanging. Don’t forget to write your child’s name and the year.

MAKE IT A TRADITION

Create one each year to see those little hands grow, and to fill your tree with handmade memories. Display them proudly, or gift them to grandparents and loved ones.

In a season that can sometimes feel rushed or commercial, small handmade projects like this offer a chance to reconnect, slow down, and remember what matters most.
