Hold onto your hats—country music is coming to town! Montana’s vibrant country music scene is about to come alive as both veteran and emerging artists take the stage across the state.

Rising country star Cody Johnson will perform at MetraPark on Friday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. Following the success of his debut album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It in 2018, Johnson released Human: The Double Album in October 2021. Featuring hits like “’Til You Can’t” and “Son of a Ramblin’ Man,” Johnson’s Texas rodeo roots shine through in his mix of gentle ballads and energetic tracks. His song “Dear Rodeo” struck a personal chord, inspiring an autobiographical documentary of the same name. Johnson’s subsequent album was equally well received by his fans, affectionately known as “CoJo Nation,” and featured storytelling hits like “Dirt Cheap” and “The Painter.” His concert at MetraPark is expected to blend the heart of traditional country with modern appeal.

Red Shahan will perform at the Pub Station on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. Shahan, a former rodeo cowboy turned singer-songwriter, is hailed as a “future American legend” with the potential to make a significant impact in the music world. Known for his blend of Americana, folk, and rock music, Shahan cites influences like AC/DC and The Indigo Girls in shaping his unique brand of country. Since releasing his debut album, Men and Coyotes, in 2015, Shahan has cultivated a loyal following drawn to his gritty sound. With three additional albums under his belt, each capturing the essence of Texas life, Shahan’s music resonates through both full-band performances and intimate acoustic sets. His latest album even features a special appearance by his mother, who inspired his love of guitar.

Wynonna Judd takes the stage at Alberta Bair Theater on Sept. 14 for a one-night-only performance. The five-time Grammy-winning superstar will perform in the intimate theater, where nearly every seat feels like the best in the house. Once part of the iconic country duo The Judds with her mother Naomi, Wynonna has established herself as a powerful solo artist. Known for hits like “Tell Me Why,” “No One Else on Earth,” and “Girls With Guitars,” Wynonna’s music has become the soundtrack of coming-of-age anthems for women around the world. From her Appalachian roots in Kentucky to some of the world’s biggest stages, Wynonna promises an evening of singalong hits, emotional storytelling, and classic country songs.

For those willing to take a drive, Lainey Wilson brings her blend of modern rockabilly country to Missoula’s Adams Center on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. Her “Country’s Cool Again” tour includes hits like “Watermelon Moonshine” and the chart-topping “Heart Like a Truck.” Wilson, who stormed the music scene in 2022, earned the titles of CMA Female Vocalist and New Artist of the Year. The daughter of a farmer and a schoolteacher, Wilson grew up listening to Buck Owens and Glen Campbell, with Dolly Parton’s style influencing her unapologetically country sound. The Western Montana setting provides the perfect backdrop for Wilson’s expansive music, making it a must-see for true country fans.

Crystal Gayle will close out the month with a performance at Alberta Bair on Sept. 24. The Kentucky native is a legend in country music, not only as the sister of Loretta Lynn but as a star in her own right. Whether singing country ballads, jazz tunes, or gospel hymns, Gayle has been a staple on the music scene since she first graced the Grand Ole Opry stage at age 16. Now 73, Gayle continues to captivate audiences with her dreamy vocals and timeless hits, ensuring an unforgettable evening of music.

Country music concerts in Montana are more than just a pastime—they’re a testament to the state’s cultural fabric. From local artists to national stars, these events bring diverse influences to the stage, enriching the country music scene in Billings and beyond.
