Get ready, Billings, the Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM) is bringing back one of its most energetic, fast-paced, and wildly fun events: the Monster Drawing Rally. Part art showcase, part live auction, and part community celebration, this one-of-a-kind experience transforms the creative process into an interactive spectacle you won't want to miss.
If you've never been, imagine dozens of local artists working live, side by side, while spectators cheer them on, music fills the room, and freshly created artwork flies off the walls as soon as the ink dries. This isn't your average art auction; it's creative chaos in the best possible way.
A CREATIVE TRADITION WITH BIG IMPACT
The first Monster Drawing Rally originated at Southern Exposure in San Francisco, but over the years, it's spread across the country, with museums and art spaces everywhere adopting the format. For the YAM, this September marks the third edition of the event, and it's quickly becoming one of Billings' most anticipated arts gatherings.
But this year's rally carries extra weight. The Yellowstone Art Museum recently faced a $170,000 funding cut from Yellowstone County, a significant blow to an institution that serves as a cultural
hub for the entire region. "Events like Monster Drawing Rally are more important than ever," says Luke Ashmore, the museum's Communications Manager. "It's a chance to celebrate creativity, support local artists, and invest directly in the future of the museum." Every ticket, every bid, and every piece of art sold helps fund educational programs and exhibitions at the YAM. Supporting the rally means keeping art alive and accessible for everyone in our community.

HOW IT WORKS
During the rally, artists are split into waves. In each round, they have one hour to create original works right before your eyes, including paintings, drawings, mixed-media pieces, and everything in between. As soon as a piece is finished, it goes up for sale at a flat rate of $50 each. "It's approachable and exciting," says Ashmore. "Whether you're a seasoned collector or buying your first-ever piece of original art, the energy of the auction makes it fun for everyone."
The bidding itself turns into a lively experience, with guests vying for their favorites as the creations come to life. Expect fast decisions, a little friendly competition, and the thrill of leaving with a one-of-a- kind piece to hang on your wall.
ART FOR EVERYONE
While "Monster Drawing Rally" might sound spooky, the "monster" refers more to the scale of the event than the subject matter. Some artists lean into Halloween inspiration, while others create portraits, landscapes, or abstract works. No matter your style, you'll find something to fall in love with.
And this event isn't just for adults. Families are encouraged to attend, with discounted youth tickets and free admission for kids under five. The vibe is upbeat, interactive, and anything but stuffy. With a live DJ keeping the energy high and an event MC guiding the action, this is the kind of museum experience that keeps kids and grown-ups engaged from start to finish.

WHAT'S NEW THIS YEAR
While YAM isn't announcing the full artist lineup just yet, the rally traditionally features a mix of Billings favorites and emerging talents. In the past, artists like Beth Korth, Maggy Rozycki Hiltner, John Kennedy, and Carol Welch have showcased their work, and this year promises another standout roster.
GUESTS CAN ALSO EXPECT:
- Multiple artist waves – Arrive anytime during the rally, and you'll still catch live action.
- A live DJ – Expect an energetic soundtrack that keeps the pace moving.
- Snacks & refreshments – Complimentary bites and drinks available for purchase at the YAM Bar.
- A family-friendly atmosphere – All ages are welcome to be part of the creative buzz.
WHY IT MATTERS
Beyond the art, the Monster Drawing Rally is about community and connection. With YAM navigating major funding challenges, attending events like this makes a real difference.
"When you attend, bid, or even just spread the word, you're helping us continue to offer the programs and exhibitions that make Billings a vibrant place for the arts," Ashmore explains.
The rally showcases the talent of local and regional artists and highlights the museum's role in fostering creativity for all ages. The funds raised directly support educational programs, hands-on workshops, and future exhibitions that serve students, families, and art lovers alike.
