Winter can make staying active feel like a challenge and can tempt even the most dedicated to retreat inside. But fresh air, movement, and a little sunlight are just as important in the colder months. The key to safely enjoying our outdoor activities can come down to simply having the right gear. Just as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes, right?

From layers that trap heat without overheating, to traction devices that keep you upright on slippery streets, the right equipment can make all the difference. We spoke with the outdoor gear experts at The Base Camp in Billings, who shared some insight on winter gear basics to help us stay active and comfortable in the winter chill.

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

Moisture-wicking merino wool  or  synthetic  long underwear is key to staying warm without overheating. Look for breathable options that layer easily under other gear.

 INSULATING MID LAYER MAGIC

A lightweight fleece or puffy jacket traps body heat while allowing movement for running, hiking and snow sports.

GRIP AND RIP: TRACTION DEVICES FOR SHOES

Slip on cleats or micro spikes turn your regular running or hiking shoes into snow and ice ready footwear.

SOLE SURVIVOR: WINTER RUNNING OR HIKING SHOES

Shoes with extra grip, water-resistant uppers and insulation help keep feet warm and dry on slushy trails.

SOCK IT TO ‘EM WITH WOOL SOCKS

These  will  help  regulate temperature and wick moisture better than cotton (remember, cotton is rotten!) and will help prevent blisters and cold toes.

HANDY HELPERS WITH QUALITY GLOVES OR MITTENS

Look  for  insulated  and breathable warmth for your hands. Touchscreen-friendly options are a game changer!

TOP IT OFF WITH HEAD AND NECK WARMERS

A  fleece-lined  headband, beanie or buff protect ears and face from icy winds.

GLOW BRIGHTLY WITH REFLECTIVE GEAR AND LIGHTS

Winter days are short and visibility matters! Add reflective vests, clip-on lights or a headlamp for early morning or evening workouts.

HAND AND TOE WARMERS FOR ADDED WARMTH

Perfect for long adventures or cold-blooded types. Toss a few in your gloves or boots for some added comfort.

TREKKING POLES OR WALKING STICKS FOR STABILITY

Adjustable poles add stability on snowy or uneven terrain and can even help engage your upper body for a better workout.

KEEP HYDRATED WITH AN INSULATED WATER BOTTLE

Stay hydrated (yes, even in the cold!) with warm tea, broth or water that won’t freeze mid-adventure.
