MSUB Hosts Annual Power of One Week, Jan 16-21, 2023

MSU Billings has a full week scheduled for its annual Power of One Week, which kicks off on January 16, 2023 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) with a Bell Ringing Ceremony at 9:45am at Peaks to Plains Park on MSUB's campus. This ceremony honors the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and features Key Speakers, Clark Sturgis and MSUB Chancellor Stefani Hicswa. The week's events include a range of programming focused on celebrating diversity. Events include movie nights, tailgating, education sessions, info booths, and cultural exposure (peep the full schedule below).
Power of One Week is open to the public, and MSUB is "happy to invite you to campus to share this week of programming with us and discover the power of one to create change," says Parker Scott, MSUB's Community Engagement Coordinator.
2023 POWER OF ONE WEEK SCHEDULE:
MONDAY, JANUARY 16
- 9:45AM @ Peaks to Plains Park | Bell Ringing Ceremony - Annual Ceremony honoring the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring words from Campus Minister Dwight Welch.
- 10-11AM @ SUB Atrium | Bell Ringing Reception - Continuing the discussion on Dr. King and how we at MSU Billings strive to follow his values. Speakers will include Chancellor Hicswa, special guest Clark Stirgus, ASMSUB President David Russell, Deputy Mayor Mike Boyett, and messages from the Offices of Senator Daines and Senator Tester. Refreshments provided.

- 7-9PM @ Petro Theatre | Diversity Movie Night: Crazy Rich Asians - Representation in media is important. Join Student Activities Board for this film viewing and bring or make new friends! Candy will be available for the first 100 students!

Wednesday, January 18
- All Day @ Library | Diverse Book Showcase - Drop into the Library and "check out" some of their diversity-themed titles. Learn more about the world around you. Refreshments will be available to fuel you on your first day of classes.
- 10:30AM-2PM @ LA Building 2nd floor lobby | Women & Gender Studies Info Booth - Women’s and Gender Studies supports programs and research which examine the status, expectations, and achievements of women on a local, regional, and national level - and more!
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18 (cont...)
- 12-2PM @ Tech Building Commons | City College Resource Booth - Stop by the Commons and learn about the resources in your community to assist and support those from diverse backgrounds.
- 3-4PM @ SUB Beartooth | Cocoa & Culture: Deaf Culture & ASL (RSVP required) - Cathy Copeland will lead a seminar on Deaf culture and ASL. Join us to broaden your understanding of deafness. Cocoa and snacks will be provided.
- 7-9PM @ SUB Glacier | Diversity Jeopardy! - Join the Library for a fun night of food and Jeopardy! Bring your friends.
Thursday, January 19
- All Day @ SUB Glacier & Tech Building Commons | Apsaalooke and Northern Cheyenne Native Trunk Exhibits - Learn about Native culture through these experiential art and culture exhibits.
- 12-2PM @ SUB Atrium | LBTQIA+ Fair - Come learn about LGBTQIA+ issues and resources in the Billings community and here on campus.
- 2:30-4PM @ SUB Beartooth | Safe Zone Training (RSVP required) - Safe Zone trainings are opportunities to learn about LGBTQIA+ identities, gender and sexuality, and examine prejudice, assumptions, and privilege.
- 5-7PM @ Rimrock Cafe | Women's Basketball Tailgate - Support the Yellowjackets and tailgate before the women's basketball game to get a free shirt!
- 7PM @ Alterowitz Gymnasium | Women's Basketball Game - Power of One Week-themed game.
Friday, January 20
- All Day @ SUB Glacier & Tech Building Commons | Apsaalooke and Northern Cheyenne Native Trunk Exhibits - Learn about Native culture through these experiential art and culture exhibits.

- 12-2PM @ LA 2nd floor lobby | Hispanic Outreach Lotería (Bingo) - Play Lotería with Hispanic Outreach!
- 2-3PM @ SUB Yellowstone | Autism 101 - An introduction to Autism at MSU Billings.
- 7-9PM @ SUB Glacier | Diversity Movie Night: Raya and the Last Dragon - Are you a fan of Disney movies? Bring family and friends for some free candy and refreshments!
Saturday, January 21
- 9:30AM-12PM @ SUB Atrium | Service Saturday (Partners: Montana Rescue Mission Bargain Center, Western Native Voice, 406 Pride) - Put what you have learned into action and help your community at this final Power of One Week event! Service Saturdays are a tradition at MSU Billings and we welcome anyone and everyone to volunteer with us for two hours on Saturday morning at various community organizations that serve diverse and underprivileged Billings citizens. Donuts provided.
