Gallery Stories That Inspire

February 2025

Article by Brittany Schimke

In Billings, art isn't just something to admire; it shapes our identity, enhances our community, and enriches our daily lives. From boosting tourism to preserving our cultural heritage, the power of art in our city is undeniable.

But in 2024, three local galleries did more than display beautiful pieces. They redefined the role of art and set new standards for creativity and community engagement. These galleries are not only changing the way we see art but also how we experience it. With bold moves like new locations, expanded spaces, and fresh visions, these galleries breathe new life into Billings’ art scene.

CONFETTI HEART STUDIO

Nestled in the historic Fratt Building in downtown Billings, Confetti Heart Studio is reshaping the definition of an art space. For owner Elizabeth Zitur (Beth), it’s about more than showcasing eclectic fine art; it’s about creating a vibrant community hub where artists, performers, and every day people come together to celebrate creativity in all its forms.

Beth’s journey to opening Confetti Heart Studio has been nothing short of magical. A lifelong artist who “can’t remember not being an artist,” she grew up in a household that nurtured her creative passions. When the opportunity arose to purchase and transform the former downtown Neecee’s space, Beth jumped at the chance. In November 2024, she officially purchased the building and began extensive renovations, leading to the studio’s grand opening this month.

Choosing “Studio” over “Gallery” was a conscious decision. Beth wanted the space to feel approachable, whether you’re an art connoisseur or someone just beginning their creative journey. “Gallery” can feel exclusive, but “studio” invites exploration, collaboration, and connection. Confetti Heart came to Beth after a joyful encounter with a confetti cannon at a convention. The explosion of vibrant colors perfectly captured the energy and spirit she wanted the studio to embody. While the walls feature fine art, you’ll also find handcrafted items like knitted hats, making the space as diverse as the people who visit.

Confetti Heart Studio is constantly evolving. Beth’s plans include opening the basement (closed since the 1980s) and expanding into back rooms to make room for large-scale art installations, pop-up events, and even culinary artistry. By restoring the original features of the historic building, she’s connecting the studio’s future with its rich past. Beth’s mission is clear: Confetti Heart Studio isn’t “just a place to view art; it’s a place to experience it.” It’s a welcoming, vibrant space where creativity thrives, connections flourish, and the Billings community grows stronger.

KIBLER & KIRCH FINE ART

Kibler & Kirch is an iconic interior design firm and gallery that blends fine art with home design to create an exceptional visitor experience. Specializing in rustic, traditional, and modern designs, the firm has been enriching lives through thoughtful interior design since 1990. In 2024, Kibler & Kirch reached a significant milestone with its rebranding efforts and launch of a new retail and gallery experience.

Their gallery, KKFA (formerly Stapleton Gallery) showcases fine art reflecting Montana's beauty and culture, from Native American pieces to Western-inspired works. But Kibler & Kirch takes it a step further by helping visitors envision these artworks not just as displays but as part of their homes. Every piece is carefully considered to help customers see how art can transform their space.

Creative Director & Principal Jeremiah Young passionately advocates for Montana’s artists. Kibler & Kirch works closely with full-time artists, fostering long-lasting relationships with local talent. The gallery’s collection includes paintings, sculptures, and photography, continually evolving to offer fresh, inspiring pieces. But the main focus of their art “somehow, in some way, speaks to place,” Jeremiah explains.

Walking through Kibler & Kirch is like walking through a home in Montana. The carefully curated spaces make it easy to imagine how the artwork would look in your living or dining room. Jeremiah believes it’s about “art and interiors and how those two things collide.” Kibler & Kirch is not just a gallery; it’s a celebration of art, design, and the place that inspires them both. As they grow, the gallery remains a hub for interior design and fine art in Billings.

TOUCAN: ART, GIFTS, AND CUSTOM PICTURE FRAMING

After four decades on Montana Avenue, Toucan made a bold move in 2024, relocating to a newly renovated space in the East Billings Urban Renewal District. The new location has allowed owners Allison O'Donnell and Mark Sanderson to reimagine the gallery and reenergize its mission to inspire creativity and connection. What was once an old auto shop is now a stunning, welcoming space that fosters community and creative expression.

For Allison and Mark, Toucan has always been about more than just showcasing art; it’s about creating a personal connection with visitors. As practicing artists, Mark, a photographer, and Allison, a painter, deeply understand the bond between artist and artwork. Their shared studio space within the gallery gives visitors a rare chance to see the creative process in action, adding a unique, intimate element to the gallery experience. "Art is for everybody," they say, and their collection reflects that belief. From handcrafted clay vases to striking photography and vibrant paintings, the gallery offers something for every taste and budget. They even offer custom picture framing, ensuring everyone can find a piece they love to take home.

This month marks the one-year anniversary of the gallery’s relocation, and in that time, Allison and Mark have worked hard to make their space accessible to all. Toucan has become a true hub for creative exchange through their commitment to local talent and community connection. It’s a place where visitors can meaningfully connect with art, artists, and each other.

Looking back on the exciting transformations of 2024, it’s impossible not to be inspired by Billings’ blossoming art scene. Galleries like Confetti Heart, Kibler & Kirch Fine Art, and Toucan aren’t just displaying beautiful artwork; they’re creating spaces where creativity thrives and community connections are made. Proof that Billings is a hidden gem in the art scene, each offers something unique: a collection of local artisans, thought-provoking exhibits, or opportunities to interact with artists personally.

As the local art scene continues to evolve, it’s helping to shape Billings into a place where creativity is appreciated and celebrated. Art has the power to transform, inspire, and unite.
