Let’s be real: Your bathroom is one of the most-used spaces in the house. Making it both beautiful and functional can have a surprisingly big impact on your daily life. Perhaps even more significant is the home’s primary bathroom, a space not only serving as a utility but also as one’s own private oasis.

At Allis Interiors, lead designer Christina Halverson is dedicated to delivering a balance of both luxury and livability. “I want my clients to love the space they’re in. I know the feeling I personally get when I walk into a room that I love; to share that with my clients is just the best feeling.”

AN EYE FOR AESTHETICS

Growing up, Christina fondly remembers accompanying her grandmother to antique stores and rummage sales. “That really put a mark on my niche and love for interior design,” she said. “Every time I went to her home, she had rearranged the furniture and moved things around,” she laughed. In fact, both Christina’s grandmothers played such an influential role in her life that Allis Interiors is named after her Grandma Phyllis and Grandma Alyce.

After a childhood spent boldly painting and repainting her bedroom walls, Christina continued to apply her love of design after she purchased a 1960s mid-century modern home over a decade ago. “I wanted the home to look a certain way and didn’t have a lot of money, so I embarked on this self-taught, DIY project with my own home and fell in love with design even more.”

Knowing that if she didn’t do it now, it would never happen, Christina later went on to enroll in and graduate from the New York Institute of Art and Design. Whether you want a designer by your side, virtual design assistance, or a full-service designer there every step of the way, Billings-based Allis Interiors can do it all.

A BATHROOM TO BEHOLD

When Billings homeowner Annie Heiser reached out to Allis Interiors, her primary bathroom was, in her words, dysfunctional and dated. “It was your classic 1990s bathroom,” she said. “A bulky Jacuzzi tub, a layout that just didn’t work, and beige everywhere. Overall, the space was tired.”

Both Christina and Annie could see the potential despite its current dysfunction. Fond of mid-century modern architecture and design, Annie gravitated to the clean lines, minimalistic aesthetics, and earthy colors portrayed in this style. “I knew I wanted the space to feel like an oasis; a place that felt calm and restorative,” she said. But beyond all that, Annie admits she trusted Christina to lead the way. “She took the scattered inspiration I had and brought it together in a way that felt so natural and polished.”

ADD STYLE WITH TILE

The entire transformation is noteworthy, but perhaps the most eye-catching element is the green-tiled walk-in shower. The vertically stacked, patterned shades of sage green add a modern twist to the classic subway tile. Christina said the gold-speckled, marble-tiled floor feels like a luxury hotel while maintaining its coziness. The use of massive 24-inch by 48-inch slabs of tile is a huge nod to its functionality, too. “For a family of four, the fewer grout lines on a floor, the better!”

STUCK ON WALLPAPER

As a fan of wallpaper, Christina enjoys introducing it to her clients' homes. “I love it; it’s just so fun,” she said. While it can feel risky, she advises hesitant homeowners to start with a small place with a door, like a laundry room or, like in Annie’s home, a newly built water closet.

ELEGANCE WITH WHITE OAK

The white oak cabinetry and vanity, known for their durability, versatility, and timeless aesthetic appeal, were ideal for this bathroom redesign. Not only can they withstand heavy use, but their warm and neutral undertones also allow other bathroom elements to shine and sparkle.

THE GOLDEN AGE

Gold fixtures and accessories have graced luxury bathrooms worldwide for centuries, and according to Christina, have reemerged within home decor in recent years. The tasteful use of gold faucets, light fixtures, and cabinet pulls adds elegance and sophistication, without overdoing it. “People either love gold or they hate it,” Christina laughed. “But again, do what you love!”

KEEPING EXPECTATIONS IN CHECK

Remodeling and redesigning a bathroom is not just choosing new tile and a bathroom suite. “Good designs don’t happen by chance. A great space is meticulously thought out, planned, curated, and executed,” Christina added.

As she guides homeowners through the design and remodeling process, Christina makes a point to set clear expectations. As with any remodel, one of the biggest challenges of redesigning a bathroom is the hidden issues underneath the floors and behind the walls. “We don’t know what we don’t know,” she said. “It’s important to set those expectations; it’s common to run into unforeseen issues, and you just have to pivot with them.”

IT PAYS TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL

Hiring an interior designer is often viewed as a luxury, but Christina believes it can save the homeowner time and money in the long run. Additionally, a professional interior designer adds an element of accountability for the homeowner. “When you’re doing a project on your own, there’s no one holding your feet to the fire to get it done,” Christina laughed. “And before you know it, you’ve been living in your home for years, still needing to get the task done. When you hire a designer, it will get done.”

Annie agreed that working with a professional designer like Christina yields a prettier space and a better experience from start to finish. “She turned my wish list into a beautiful, functional reality and worked closely with contractors to make sure every detail stayed on track,” she said. “She came in and styled every corner, even hanging the artwork, to make the space feel truly lived in. That level of attention and care made all the difference.”
