Montana proudly boasts the fact that it is considered one of the top adventure destinations in the country, and while many residents partake in the plethora of activities that Big Sky Country offers, there are just as many that have yet to “break the barrier” or push through whatever it is that might be holding them back. That barrier could be one or more things, from a lack of tangible items such as gear, clothing, or equipment to a lack of knowledge, information, or simply time. This article will point you in the right direction as you boldly step out, ready to experience the magic of Montana’s great outdoors.

TREASURE STATE TRAILHEAD

A trailhead is defined as “a place where a trail begins.” Billings happens to be just that: the trailhead to an abundance of outdoor activities in the great treasure state of Montana. Billings is the hub linking us to many nearby communities and areas loaded with adventure and recreation opportunities. It is also an excellent provider of all things gear and apparel related, with several local sporting goods stores available and ready to assist in all outdoor recreation needs. Many places provide gear for purchase and have the option to rent.

POPULAR ACTIVITIES EASILY ACCESSED IN AND FROM BILLINGS:

HIKING: One of the most accessible outdoor activities. It allows you to explore scenic landscapes at your own pace. Trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs.

CAMPING: Spending a night in the wilderness fosters a deep connection with nature and helps you unwind from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

ROCK-CLIMBING: A physically and mentally demanding sport, rock climbing pushes your limits while offering breathtaking views.

KAYAKING AND CANOEING: Water-based adventures allow you to navigate lakes and rivers while enjoying a full- body workout.

MOUNTAIN BIKING: For adrenaline seekers, mountain biking provides an exhilarating experience on rugged terrains.

FISHING: Using a rod, reel, line, and hook to catch fish for recreation and/or profit. Fishing can be enjoyed in the slow- moving waters of a lake or the fast-flowing streams of a river.

DIY – DO IT YOURSELF!

Time, money, and resources can often be limited, and that’s okay! Don’t let that stop you from experiencing what our state offers. For those motivated to get out there and do what they can with what they have, here are some great ideas that don’t require much.

DISC GOLF

This fun and adventurous activity, also known as Folfing (frisbee golfing), is quite popular here in Billings, with several scenic courses. It does require a special disc, which you can find at most sporting goods stores. They typically range in price from $8/10 to $20/25 per disc. There are no fees for the courses, making this activity quite affordable. Grab some friends, get outside, move your body and enjoy a round of disc golf! Three recommended courses:

  • Diamond X Disc Golf Course at Phipps Park
  • Pioneer Disc Golf Course at Pioneer Park
  • High Sierra Disc Golf Course in the heights

PUBLIC PARKS

Billings’ public parks are a simple yet beautiful way to get outside and embrace nature right here in our community.

Below are several ideas you may not have considered until now!

  • Bird-watching – Riverfront Park, Norm’s Island, Shiloh Conservation Area, and many others!
  • Geocaching – Excuse me, what? In case you’ve never heard of it, geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt in which you use GPS to locate hidden containers, or “geocaches”. Create a free account online at geocaching.com. You can search for nearby geocaches from there – let the adventure begin!
  • Biking – While Billings is not a “mountain town,” it offers several trails as close to mountain biking as it gets here in the magic city. Check out Zimmerman Park West Loop, Phipps Park Trail, Highline Loop Trail, and Riverfront Park Loop, along the Yellowstone River.
  • Picnicking at Pictograph State Park – pack a lunch and head southeast of town, to explore this historic landmark!

CAR CAMPING & HIKING

No tent? No problem! Car camping is widely accepted nationwide and is a great way to sleep under the stars without owning the gear. Make a bed out of your backseat and taste the “camp life.” Make it a two-for-one adventure by parking in the mountains, nearby well-managed hiking trails, ranging in levels from beginner to expert.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

  • Campground reservations: Most campgrounds require advance reservations. The days of “first come, first serve " are long gone. Reservations are generally made over the phone or online.
  • Bear safety: Keep your camp clean. Do not leave anything with a scent outside overnight. This includes items like toothpaste and deodorant, not just food. While hiking, it is wise to carry bear spray. Do your research on extra bear safety tips.
  • Choosing the right trail: Consider factors like your fitness level, available time, weather conditions, elevation gain, and overall experience. Talk to locals, specifically those who work in outdoor retail. Research the trails online, as the Internet is an excellent source of information.
  • Meal prep: Because you’ve got to eat, right?! Keeping it simple is the best plan for camping, especially car camping. Without a refrigerator, stovetop or microwave, non-perishable food items are the way to go! Things such as canned chicken, tuna packets, summer sausage, beef jerky, crackers, trail mix, nuts, peanut butter and fruits like apples, oranges and bananas, are excellent energy options to fuel your body for the adventure ahead! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are known to be a man’s best friend when recreating outdoors.

GUIDED ADVENTURES

Sometimes the best way to navigate the outdoors is through the wisdom and expertise of a guide, and in Montana we have the best of the best! There are many reasons to hire a guide, but peace of mind is the most important. Hiring a highly trained and skilled guide is a wise decision regarding safety, experience, and knowledge. There are guides for just about any of Montana’s outdoor activities, and a simple online search can connect you to local guides and guides just beyond Billings’ borders!

Best guided adventures for families include:

  • Horseback riding
  • White-water rafting
  • Fly-fishing tours
  • Day Hikes or Overnight Backpacking trips
  • Rock-climbing

This article has provided the insight and inspiration to break through any barriers keeping you from experiencing all Montana offers. Connect with local experts, start small, and invite family and friends to join you. But most importantly, get out there and discover the adventure that makes you feel truly alive!
