10 Simple Ways to Kick Cabin Fever this Winter

Montana summers come fast and full. Long days, nonstop activity, and easy connections with the people around us. By fall, we welcome the slower pace, and the first snowfall feels almost magical. Then the holidays pass, and reality sets in: winter still has months to go. Here comes cabin fever. Instead of counting the days until summer, let’s make the most of the season we’re in. Here are some simple ways to keep your spirit bright all winter long."

1) TAKE A CLASS AT THE CARBON COUNTY ARTS GUILD

Housed in a charming historic train depot, the Guild is a haven for hands-on learning. From watercolor workshops and figure drawing to gelatin printing and weaving demos, there’s always a way to spark your imagination. With over 250 members, rotating exhibitions, and a welcoming atmosphere, the Guild is the perfect winter getaway for your creativity.

2) GLIDE ACROSS THE RED LODGE ICE RINK OR CATCH A HOCKEY GAME

When you’re ready for fresh air, the Red Lodge Ice Rink, open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m., is a classic winter escape. Skate rentals are available nearby at Grizzly Peak Outdoors, and the rink is free unless reserved for private events. If you’d prefer to spectate, check the Red Lodge Ice Facebook page for the Town Series Hockey game schedule.

3) HIT THE SLOPES WITH WEDNESDAYS 4 WOMEN

For a more adventurous winter fix, try Wednesdays 4 Women at Red Lodge Mountain. This new program offers midweek sessions for women of all skill levels, top-level coaching, and a chance to meet fellow shredders. After a morning on the slopes, warm up and connect with the crew at a reserved table in the Bierstube.

4) VISIT THE YELLOWSTONE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY IN RED LODGE

YWS does not have regular hours January-March, but you can schedule a private tour if you call ahead. The animals are more active in the cold weather, and they LOVE the snow!

5) VISIT THE TREASURES OUT WEST MUSEUM IN DOWNTOWN JOLIET

Treasures Out West is a new western transportation themed museum featuring antique wagons restored by Dave Engel. Engel has become a YouTube sensation, showcasing his craftsmanship while honoring the American West. The museum also has a gift shop featuring local crafters and artists with handmade items, along with Wilcoxson's Ice Cream.

6) LEARN TO SNOW-SHOE OR CROSS-COUNTRY SKI

The Base Camp is going to be your one stop shop if you want to get out on winter trails. Their staff brings a depth of knowledge and experience, so you can be confident about where to go and what to bring. Rentals available.

7) WINE TASTING AT TONGUE RIVER WINERY IN MILES CITY

This local winery has been making wines entirely from Montana fruit and grapes since 2010. The venue offers a tasting room, vineyard tours. If you want to make it an overnight stay, there are two guest rooms that can be booked via Airbnb. The B&B stay includes the option of an evening meal, private wine tasting, and wandering the property to their heart’s content.

8) WEEKEND GETAWAY AT THE GRAND IN BIG TIMBER

This historic hotel offers a classic mining town vibe with modern amenities. The in-house restaurant is nationally acclaimed, and a range of massage and wellness services are available.

9) BOOK A SNOWMOBILE TOUR IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Check out Gary Fales Outfitting for a guided tour of YNP. Tours depart from the East entrance of Yellowstone, near Cody, WY. If you’d rather explore on your own, rentals are available, too.

10) INVEST IN A SOLO STOVE

If you’re a committed winter homebody, this is the easiest way to create warmth, and it feels like a subtle act of rebellion against the darkness of winter. Leave it on your back patio and have kindling and fire starters nearby for easy lighting.
