January 2025 Editor's Note: Warmth & Comfort

January 2025

by Stephanie Toews, Executive Editor

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” Edith Sitwell

I fondly remember bundling up to play in the snow, building forts, rolling snowmen, and spending hours outside as a child. I’d come back inside with rosy cheeks, frozen fingers, toes, and nose and warm up with a classic cup of Swiss Miss hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. Back then, winter adventures felt effortless. These days, it takes a lot more intention to get outdoors during the colder months. My idea of winter fun often leans toward cozy evenings by the fireplace with a good book or a soak in the hot tub. Does that count as outdoor time? Still, I love an evening walk with our dog around the neighborhood, bundled up with warm coats, gloves, and hats, flashlights in hand. The mental boost from a winter walk proves that a little fresh air can go a long way.

As the Christmas decorations are packed away and we all settle into the rhythms of a new year, it’s the perfect time to embrace wellness and a fresh start. Instead of focusing on the gray skies or frosty mornings, this season offers a chance to spark creativity, explore the outdoors, and even bring nature inside through winter gardening. Our first issue of 2025 is brimming with inspiration to help you prioritize health and wellness, enjoy the beauty just outside your door, dine on comfort food, and live fully in the community we call home. Let’s welcome the new year with inspiration that warms both heart and home!

As you journey through wintertime, don’t forget to share a little warmth- a gesture of grace and mercy, a compassionate spirit, or a heartfelt conversation over a hot drink. These small acts can make a world of difference in the lives of our neighbors and strengthen the bonds of community. While winter might feel like a season of hibernation, it’s also an opportunity to nurture your body, mind, and soul. Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone or warm home and try something new. From cozy indoor activities to refreshing outdoor adventures, our community is filled with opportunities to bring joy and connection and make the most of this season. Embrace it all, and let winter be a time of renewal, joy, and shared moments.

Happy New Year!
