October 2023 Editor's Note: Harvest of Giving
October 2023
by stephanie toews, executive editor
To give and not expect anything in return, that is what lies at the heart of love.”Oscar Wilde
There’s an inherent beauty in the act of generosity. While it may seem counterintuitive that giving can lead to receiving more, this principle has been tested and proven true time and time again. Practicing generosity lifts us beyond our own concerns, renews our focus on others and our own blessings, and possesses the power to enrich us in ways we never expected. The more we give, the more we receive. We’ll find it returned in overflow, and our measure of generosity will determine what comes back to us.
It’s all too easy to become self-absorbed, to narrow our view of the world, and lose sight of the struggles others face. Our own problems, stresses, and worries can consume us, causing us to forget about the challenges others are enduring. But when we take the time to broaden our perspective through acts of giving—whether through our time, skills, or resources—we sow seeds that will yield a harvest of blessings and create a ripple effect in our community, one selfless act at a time. A strong and vibrant community thrives when its members are mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy.
Perhaps the greatest way that we can contribute to our community through love in action is by giving back. In this edition, we celebrate the givers, the individuals, and organizations dedicated to building a flourishing community, one non-profit at a time. Our 2023 Non-Profit Guide provides inspiration for giving back throughout the year.
Each of us possesses a unique gift to offer the world. Our life stories, the blessings we’ve received, and our talents and abilities are meant to be shared for the benefit of others. We grow, learn, and become whole through collaboration and sharing. May this Harvest of Giving issue serve as an inspiration, igniting your desire to give back to those in need through your time, talents, and resources. The most profound rewards in life often come from giving ourselves wholeheartedly to others.
Love,
Stephanie
