Hands On: Carbon Dioxide Puts Out Fire (video)
September 2, 2021

As we discovered in the September pages of SLM, fire fighters use smothering techniques to extinguish blazes. This video demonstrates that principal by mixing baking soda and vinegar. The reaction produces carbon dioxide, an invisible gas that’s heavier than air, so you can carefully “pour” it over a candle, which smothers the blaze and extinguishes it. If you try this at home, make sure to have an adult assist you. Be careful and have fun!
