Tumbleweed, a Billings-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting homeless and at-risk youth, has been awarded the most recent Hands of Hope grant from Western Security Bank. The Hands of Hope grant program is designed to support nonprofit organizations that are making a powerful impact in our community, and Tumbleweed is certainly doing just that.
Funding from the grant will be used to support Tumbleweed’s Drop-In Center, which provides essential services to help homeless youth as they seek education and employment. The Drop-In Center provides direct services like assistance obtaining birth certificates and IDs, purchasing work-appropriate clothing, and covering housing application fees. All of these can be huge barriers for youth attempting to move toward stability, employment, and long-term success. Community support for the Drop-In Center is critical: “Our Drop-In center is totally donation-funded,” says Georgia Cady, Executive Director of Tumbleweed.
This year’s grant comes at a meaningful time for the organization. In April, Tumbleweed will celebrate 50 years of serving youth in the Billings community. Founded in 1976, the nonprofit has remained a consistent presence for young people navigating homelessness and often traumatic circumstances.
Georgia noted that while reaching 50 years is a testament to strong leadership and community support, it also highlights the continued need for services. “It’s unfortunate that we still need to be here and that services are still required,” she said, “but I think it speaks volume to the board leadership and dedicated staff that Tumbleweed continues to be here.”
And thanks to support from the community and organizations like Western Security Bank, Tumbleweed can continue its mission of helping youth move toward safety and independence.
