Big Win for the Billings Public Library

You know that feeling when your hometown team takes home the trophy? That’s the vibe over at the Billings Public Library right now because they’ve just been named Library of the Year by the Montana Library Association. And yes, we’re doing a happy dance right alongside them.

What’s behind this well-deserved recognition? One word (well, technically three): Library Express Lockers

This genius little program is revolutionizing the way Billings and Yellowstone County access library materials. It’s kind of like having a 24/7 book vending machine, minus the candy bar temptation. Here’s how it works: you hop online, request the books (or movies, or audiobooks whatever your literary heart desires), pick your preferred locker location, and bam they’re ready and waiting for you. All you need is your library card and PIN. Plus, you can return your items anytime too. It’s convenience with a capital C.

The program is now in its third year and boasts four locker locations around the city:

  • Billings Public Library – 510 North Broadway
  • Children’s Clinic (West End) – 3401 Avenue E
  • Intermountain Health Clinic – Heights – 32 Wicks Lane
  • Intermountain Health Clinic – Lockwood – 2504 US Hwy 87 E

Two of those sites: the Children’s Clinic and the Heights Intermountain Health Clinic are so popular; they’ve been running at over 75% capacity for months. That’s some serious community engagement, and we’re not surprised. Who doesn’t want a library that meets you where you are, literally?

“This program is an incredible example of the innovative spirit that is at the core of the Billings Public Library,” said Interim Library Director Kelsie Rubich. We couldn’t agree more. Taking a concept from the business world and transforming it into something that makes books and resources more accessible? That’s the kind of creativity our community loves to see.

Of course, this kind of magic doesn’t happen without a village. The program’s success is thanks in part to the dream team of community partners like the Children’s Clinic, Intermountain Health, and the always-generous Billings Library Foundation. Their support has helped bring this ambitious vision to life.

Jeannie Tracy, Executive Director of the Library Foundation, put it best: “It is rewarding to see that our donors continue to give generously in order to enhance and expand Library services to our community.” We’re clapping for you, donors.

If you’re wondering how people are feeling about these lockers? Let’s just say they’re sparking a lot of unexpected joy. One representative from the Children’s Clinic shared how families, patients, and even passersby light up when they see someone grabbing a book. It’s a simple moment that says a lot: connection, curiosity, community.

Want to celebrate with the Library team?

Mark your calendar for June 20 at 10:30 a.m. That’s when the Library is throwing a well-earned party at the Children’s Clinic locker site (3401 Avenue E). It’s their first outdoor storytime of the summer, and it comes with ice cream, stories, and stethoscopes. Yes, you read that right. It’s called “Stethoscopes and Stories,” and it promises to be equal parts heartwarming and delicious.
