- Family Reading Program. Begins January 23 and runs through February 29. Billings Public Library. Family Reading encourages families to develop the habit of reading aloud together. Studies have shown that children who are read aloud to have improved language skills and are more successful in school. Pick up a Family Reading postcard at the Children’s Desk and initial a stocking cap on the postcard for every day the family reads together for 20 minutes a day. Family = 2 people, with one person being 12 or younger. Once a family has read for 20 days return the postcard to the Children’ Desk for a book, coupons from local businesses as supplies last and an entry into a drawing for a special grand prize. - 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Billings Public Library. A national initiative to increase early childhood literacy. The purpose behind this program is to foster the love of reading at an early age and encourage parent and child bonding through reading.
