For over a century, the Billings Depot has been more than just a building—it’s been a beacon of history and community in downtown Billings. This historic train station has been a cherished venue for generations, from hosting governors and Hollywood celebrities to celebrating the love stories of countless brides and grooms. Nestled across five city blocks, with its charming ticket windows, a nostalgic caboose, and a lush community green space, the Depot is a vibrant reminder of our shared past.
But with age comes the responsibility of preservation. The Billings Depot, now a 501(c)(3) community-owned nonprofit, has a mission: to protect and preserve this historic campus so it can continue to serve as a cornerstone for the Billings community. Every event and celebration held here helps fund the ongoing preservation efforts. However, maintaining such a significant piece of history requires constant care, attention, and, yes, funds.
The Billings Depot has always risen to the challenge of preserving its legacy, tackling essential projects from upgrading fire suppression systems to particular restoration work. But like many, the Billings Depot faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. With events postponed and funds diminished, critical capital improvement projects had to be put on hold.
These aren’t just cosmetic updates; they are crucial to ensuring the Depot’s future. The Capital Improvement projects are critical to the infrastructure, building updates, meeting building codes, enhancing security, and energy efficiency. Let’s break it down:
- Exterior Door Refinishing: The Depot’s grand doors have weathered the years, and now, they need some love. Refinishing will not only restore their original splendor but also improve energy efficiency and security.
- Concrete Repairs along Walkways: Cracked and degraded concrete isn’t just an eyesore; it’s a safety hazard. Restoring these pathways will ensure accessibility and protect the building foundations from water damage.
- Roof Updates & Miscellaneous Painting: The Depot’s roofs and walls have stood strong for decades. With new snow spikes and a fresh coat of paint, we’ll safeguard the structures and keep the walkways safe.
- Historic Post Building Restoration: This project will honor the building’s original function as a mailroom. From repairing doors and windows to updating electrical systems, we’re committed to bringing this piece of history back to life.
- Miscellaneous Floor Repairs: The Depot’s baggage room has seen countless footsteps over the years. It’s time to repair and refinish the worn wood flooring to ensure it can welcome guests for years to come.
In 2023, the Billings Depot was awarded a state grant of $414,000 to be used to support the capital improvement projects the Billings Depot had to defer. The grant application process started back in 2022. Due to inflation and a 20% match requirement from the grant the Billings Depot requires a remaining $120,000 needed to complete all of the projects; so Depot can continue to host events and positively impact the economic growth of Billings and tourism within the State. The Depot has secured $32,000 of the funds but is asking their communities for help to secure the rest.
Deep into event seasons this year and preparing for the well-loved haunted house just around the corner, they are reaching out to the community—the very people who have made the Depot what it is today. The Billings Depot is asking for your support to raise the funds by the end of the year. A donation, no matter the size, will directly impact the future of the Billings Depot and ensure it continues to be a vital part of the Billings community and a draw for tourism across the state.
The potential return of the passenger rail system only serves to underscore the importance of our mission. Let’s unite to ensure the Billings Depot is not just ready to serve us, but also future generations, as we prepare for this significant development.
